I'm doing a volunteer project at an elderly care center. What should I name my project title?

What I do there: Helped pass out food for meals, visited residents room to room, helped clean, assisted with activities such as bingo and church service, and brought in two of my puppy dogs to lighten the moods of the residents.

Young at Heart

How does a vet perform a c-section? Where do they cut the dog open at? Can the dog take care of the pups after

How does a vet perform a c-section? Where do they cut the dog open at? Can the dog take care of the pups after she has a c-section? What kind of milk can a puppy eat if the mom can't take care of it. How much and how often does a puppy need fed if the mom can't tend to it?

Good question!

There are two different areas we can make the incision. One resembles a spay incision and the other is an incision we can make on either side of the b*tch.

When preforming a Section we use a very safe anesthetic (called Sevo) so the puppies come out breathing and pink more times then not. The Sevo also allows the b*tch to wake up literally within seconds of stopping the Sevo.

Once the b*tch "finds her face" again the first thing we do is to have her nurse the puppies. We never allow the pups or b*tch to leave without nursing first.

Before manufactured dog food was popular was there a difference in feeding behavior?

I would like to know in a multi-dog household if there were more issues with food aggression or dog to dog aggression around the food bowls? So if they were on table scraps for their meals what feeding behaviors did you see?

Before commerical dog food people when to the butcher for scraps, ie., raw, meaty bones, meat scraps, etc. and table scraps. I raw feed my dogs, no table scraps and see little aggression with any food.

What are some good dog training books or DVD?

I currently have my 5 month old in puppy class. I was going to go through all 4 classes at Petsmart, but now I'm thinking I could save about $300.00 and teach my dog the same things (and probably more), if I invest in a good book or DVD. Any suggestions? I'd prefer a DVD, but books are fine too. That way I can also apply the training to our other two dogs at the same time.
I do have a clicker… I was very impressed with how easy and quickly she responded to it. I take my dogs to the dog park so they do a lot of socializing there. I'm just not very impressed with the training I'm getting. Asking questions is hard, because I think the trainer is more distracted than the dogs. :-)
The 'for dummies' series are always good. But, please ask your vet for listings of other local obedience clubs (surely some are cheaper) & do take your pup to a formal class. The benefits are as much about socializing your pup as is about teaching manners. That is something you can't get with home schooling.

does anyone know what this dog behavior is?

I have two male dogs, a 1 year-old dachshund and a 12 year old beagle…On two seperate occasions, the dachshund will bark verociously at something and get really riled up . My beagle will then join him in barking and will run around, which he rarely does because he is so old and then he will run over and smell my dachshund's crotch and bum and give them a nudge with his snout. Does anyone know what this behavior is?

Your dachshund's odor will certainly change in these moments: most likely because of increased adrenaline because he is alert, but if he is barking due to fear, he could release his anal glands and your beagle would smell that. Your beagle is just checking out this new smell. Normal for any dog, but especially a breed that was meant to follow a scent.
